چکیده

This document provides a description of a 2 liter hydrocarbon liquid flow calibration standard operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Fluid Metrology Group to provide flowmeter calibrations for customers. This facility uses a passive piston prover technique where fluid is driven by pumps while the measuring piston is pushed by the fluid over a measured length during a measured time. This facility is presently operated using MIL-C7024C fluid, but other fluids could be used to offer a different range of fluid properties. The facility has uncertainty of ± 0.01 % (k=2 or approximately 95 % confidence level) over the flow range 0.19 L/min to 5.7 L/min (0.05 gal/min to 1.5 gal/min). In this document, we provide an overview of the hydrocarbon liquid flow calibration service and the procedures for customers to submit their flowmeters to NIST for calibration. We derive the equation for calculating flow at the meter under test, including the corrections for storage effects caused by changes in fluid density and connecting volume (due to temperature changes). Finally we analyze the uncertainty of the flow standard, give supporting data, and provide a sample calibration report.

Olefin Production from Heavy Liquid Hydrocarbon Thermal Cracking: Kinetics and Product Distribution

Thermal cracking of a heavy liquid hydrocarbon was performed in a laboratory scale tubular reactor. Central Composite Design (CCD), was used as an experimental design method. The design variables were Coil Outlet Temperature (COT), feed flow and rate steam ratio. Maximum yield of ethylene was 30.37 wt% at COT, residence time and steam ratio of 869oC, 0.208 s and 1.22 g/g, respect...

Methylene unit calibration for analysis of organic acids by gas--liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry.

We describe a method for automatic computation of "methylene unit" retention-time indices in real time on a computer-controlled gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer system. The calculation is based on the exponential relationship between the methylene unit values of hydrocarbon reference standards and the oven temperature at their elution. Using this mathematical relationship, we calculated cali...

Flow Measurement and Instrumentation

The Lorentz force flowmeter (LFF) is a measuring device utilizing localized static magnetic fields for the non-contact measurement of the flow rate in electrically conducting fluids. In case of highly aggressive or high-temperature conductive fluids, it is difficult to reproduce in a laboratory the conditions typically met in application. Hence, calibration becomes a difficult task. For the LFF...

Dynamic Weighing Calibration Method for Liquid Flowmeters -a New Approach

In the last years, the PTB liquid flow group has been working on the development of a new method to calibrate liquid flowmeters under dynamics conditions [1,2]. Such a measurement principle is based on a dynamic weighing approach, which is able to reproduce the unit of mass flow several times, with the ultimate goal to reduce the calibration time, energy cost, and workload in liquid flow calibr...

Numerical Investigation of the Influence of Sand Particle Concentration on Long Radius Elbow Erosion for Liquid-Solid Flow

Erosion caused by sand transportation in flow changing devices is a serious concern in the hydrocarbon and mineral processing industry, which entail to failure and malfunction of flow devices. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with discrete phase models (DPM) were employed for analysis of carbon steel long radius 90-Degree elbow erosion due to the sand concentration of 2, 5 and ...
